Today we’re sharing a story of Black women’s empowerment from our own backyard!
Angela Mickens is a nurse, Black women’s health advocate, Vice President of Black Women 4 Healthy Living, and a Des Moines native! Mickens has worked in hospitals for over 25 years, but it was at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March of 2020 that she really began to step up her healthcare advocacy.
She organized accessible vaccine clinics, joined Black Women 4 Healthy Living where she conducts monthly events that focus on Black women’s health, and organizes blood drives with the Red Cross to address the needs of sickle cell patients.
Mickens plans to continue all of her work because she believes that change requires collective effort. You can learn more about Angela Mickens and Black Women 4 Healthy Living here.
