In a world where we, as Black women, often find ourselves at the crossroads of adversity and strength, there's an undeniable magic that lives within us. The amount of innovation, musicality, creativity, and expression that radiates from Black women is truly amazing. What many may not realize, however, is that this very power holds the key to a pathway for freedom, healing, and empowerment to flow through their lives.
On Sunday, October 22nd, this truth will come alive and shine brightly at the 2nd Annual Empowerment Arts Showcase, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. A powerful event designed to celebrate the resilience and creativity of Black women, it is a platform where survivors of domestic violence will share their journey of healing through their favorite art forms. This event will be both empowering and deeply moving.
As we gather to witness and celebrate the powerful live examples from domestic violence survivors, it is essential to recognize the strength and resilience that we hold, Sisters. This event is a tribute to our ability to transform pain into power, using art as a form of expression and healing. By showcasing these creative talents and sharing stories in a loving and welcoming setting, we hope to uplift and empower survivors, reminding us all of our incredible strength and the beauty that lies within our narratives.
This Year’s Artists
Yvette Sutton - Visual Artist
Yvette started creating 50 years ago when she could hold a pencil, but started sharing her creativity with others in the last 10 years. Armed with the glass table bought by her children, she creates custom sneakers, acrylic/oil/watercolor paintings, wood burnings, and more at Mainframe Studios.
Sanaa Chan - Poetic Artist
Sanaa started writing poetry and spoken word 5 years ago. Why? In her own words, “it gives me a reason to feel like I deserved to be heard.”
Antwonette Shade - Poetic Artist
Antwonette has been writing poetry for 28 years and spoken word for 4. Her quiet power definitely moves those who listen from passive listeners to active participants who interact with her art.
Courageous Fire - Musical Arist
Courageous grew up in a family of singers, and got a paper piano to learn on at 4 years. She started directing her family and arranging vocals at 12. She still writes, sings, and plays to this day when she needs to release a message or just be carried to another realm through music.
